Directions for Cooking Up Homemade Cheddar Cheese Dog Biscuits
- Begin by preheating the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Place the 1 1/4 cup of water into the saucepan. Place on medium heat and ring the water to a boil.
- Once the water has reached a boil, add in the 1/4 cup of margarine and milk. Stir until the margarine has melted and the ingredients are mixed well.
- Take the two cubes of bullion and crumble them into the saucepan with the rest of the wet ingredients. Continue to stir until the bullion has dissolved. This will give the treats an appealing meaty undertone.
- Once the bullion has dissolved, turn off the stove and remove the saucepan from the heat source.
- Crack two eggs and place them inside a small bowl. Use a whisk or fork to beat the eggs. Pour the egg with the ingredients in the saucepan and stir to mix the ingredients.
- Allow the contents of the saucepan to cool for five to ten minutes and continue on to the next step.
- Measure our the dry ingredients – the flour, the rolled oats, the cornmeal and the grated or shredded cheese – and combine them in the large mixing bowl. Use your hands to mix the ingredients.
- Pour the contents of the saucepan – the wet ingredients – into the large mixing bowl with the dry ingredients.
- Use a mixer to thoroughly mix the ingredients into a dough consistency.
- Remove about one-third of the dough at a time and place on a floured surface. Add 1/2 cup of flour at a time and knead until the dough is of a moderately firm consistency.
- Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a thickness between 1/4 and 1/8 inch thickness.
- Use your favorite bone-shaped cookie cutter to create the treats. For precise control over the size of the treats, instead utilize a rolling pizza cutter to create block-shaped treats. Smaller treats are great for use as a reward during training, while larger treats are great for large-breed dogs.
- Once the dough is cut into the desired shape and size, place the treat onto a large greased cookie sheet, with approximately 1/2 inch separating the cookies.
- Place the cookie sheet inside the oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes or until the dog biscuits have taken on a golden brown color.
- Once cooking is complete, turn off the oven and remove the cookie sheet. Allow the treats to cool and then serve to your favorite canine friend.
Like most homemade baked goods, these cheddar cheese dog treats are preservative-free. They must be refrigerated or frozen. When refrigerated, the treats will be good for about one week, while they will last indefinitely when frozen.
