Several brands of dog treats have been recalled due to the salmonella contamination involving peanut butter. Some pet foods and treats contain the tainted peanut butter.

Dozens of foods - including pet food and pet treats - have been recalled as a result of the peanut butter salmonella scare.

The recalled pet foods and treats all contain peanut butter from the Peanut Corporation of America's manufacturing plant in Georgia where some of the peanut butter was found to be contaminated with salmonella.

Two brands of dog treats were added to the list of recalled pet foods in early February 2009: Carolina Prime Dog Treats and Healthy Hide Dog Treats. These two pet treat brands join the list of recalled dog foods, which also includes Grreat Choice Dog Biscuits, Puppy Chow Dog Treats and Healthy Choice Multi Flavored Dog Biscuits.

What are the Symptoms of Salmonella in Dogs and Cats?

The signs of salmonella in a dog, cat or other pet include:

  • Vomiting (often with blood present)
  • Diarrhea (often with blood present)
  • Refusing to Eat/Drink
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Dehydration

Pet owners who find that their dog or other pet has eaten a recalled pet food or other recalled pet product should closely monitor the pet for symptoms of salmonella. Notably, not every dog who eats a recalled dog treat will necessarily end up with salmonella.

Salmonella is a very serious and potentially deadly illness in pets; supportive care like antitbiotics and fluid injections are often parts of routine treatment for a dog with salmonella.
